Marshall DSL 40 combo

Postby alanb » 14 Aug 2015, 09:56

Just bought a new amp and after less than 2 hours it gave up on me. It started to make a steadily increasing humming noise then after a while no sound at all and the power light was still lit. Any ideas guys ?. The amp is going back but just curious to know the problem for future reference.
I think Marshall amps are rubbish now they are made abroad Vietnam.

Sounds like smoothing capacitors (assuming there are such things in a solid state amp) gave up, possibly due to operating temperature.

Isn't this a valve amp?

I don't know about the current valve models , but I have a Marshall DG50 FX which is a transistor amp made in India- I got it secondhand and have been using it for gigs etc for some years now- it's 100% reliable.

Hi and thanks for the replies guys, The amp is a valve amp 4 x ECC83's and 2 x EL84's I thought it may have been a valve gone due to being humped about in transit but all the valves were lit (I know this is no real indicator without a valve tester) but at least it gives you some idea.
I think Marshall have lost their way a bit of late, some of the top end made in UK amps are great but the far eastern stuff is rubbish. Chipboard cabs and cheap components are not a good idea just to keep the price down at the cost of a hard earned reputation. Just bought an Orange CR60 solid state amp to replace it and oh what a difference in quality, plywood cab and I assume quality components as stated in the booklet for the launch of their first venture into solid state high powered amps.
I have checked out the build on their valve amps and they are hand wired inside and very nicely put together so here goes and I hope I have better luck with this one.
