Hall and Collins Echo Unit Live Trial

Postby Hank2k » 26 Apr 2015, 09:41

Hi All

My band the Wannabe Shadows did a gig last night in Braintree and I was extremely honoured to have Charlie Hall turn up along with the long anticipated Hall and Collins Signature Echo machine.

Charlie kindly allowed me to use the echo machine for the gig and to give my honest opinion. The sound of this machine really is magic, it is really user friendly, like the meazzis if you pick harder the harmonic response of the echos works with it. There is also drive on some of the echos to give a slightly grittier sound for the early shads period. The controls on the front panel work really well too, as I found with the Q2 etc the echos were great with some amps but not quite with others, they needed turning up or turning down depending on amp response. My rig was a Vox ac30, Caline 10 band eq and the Hall and Collins machine. Overall I am very impressed with it and am very much looking forward to receiving my unit and I would also like to thank Charlie for coming to the gig last night to see my band.

Here are some photos of the unit and packaging that everyone will be getting.

I'd be interested to know how in your honest opinion, it compares with your Zoom G3. Is it £500 better ? :)

Hi dave

To be honest no it certainly isn't 5 times better than the zoom. I'm very happy with the zoom but it is a very good echo machine for all sorts of echo purpose not just shads but it does and extra 5-10% of the sound that some of us chase over the zoom. Its a lot of cash but then so is a meazzi, long tom etc. I gig regularly with the zoom and will still use it once I get my hall and Collins but for recording and dedicated shadows gigs where I would normally use my meazzi I will be using this. It reminded me sound wise very much of the machine that Colin from the Rapiers uses and that is "that sound".

Thanks Steve, you have confirmed what I was thinking. I did listen to your clip on Charlie's site, but I'm not hearing any magic.
I would hasten to add that I have ordered the H&C and in no way am I wanting to criticise it, I am hoping that it will be the answer, but I will be listening and forming an opinion based on what I hear when making comparisons with the real deal. Looking forward to getting my own and give it the chance to impress. :)

the clip on charlie halls site that dave is referring to was recorded on a mobile phone as i understand it, so not a great way to judge it at the moment. as dave says get the real thing in our hands then see what its like. peter
