Originally the Bass VI always had flatwound strings.
As well as Eric Haydock using one in the early Hollies, Jack Bruce of Cream and Noel Redding with Hendrix both played them as basses early on with both groups- even The Beatles used one as a bass on a few tracks.
Quite a few groups worldwide playing instrumental music in the early '60's used one as a bass too. They matched Fender Jaguars for a flash guitar front line!
My mate the bass player in my band still has his old original 1964 model which he bought new, which I've played a few times- using one as a lead instrument like Jet, I plugged it into my guitar amp (with reverb) then took a line out to a bass amp for the full range and stage volume, but that was at a practice when I could muck around! I used it once on a live gig just through my guitar amp to play Diamonds etc (I know, not a Bass VI on the record! Didn't have a Jaguar handy...) My mate uses it himself occasionally to play Besame Mucho
They can be a bugger to tune and are pretty hard work to play, especially as a lead instrument..session players used them when they first came out to double with standup double bass on records etc- they called it 'tic-tac' bass.
