Perhaps, dare I say it, by 2004, Hank just couldn't be bothered about switching pickups when playing live...he had his generic 'modern' Hank sound and that was that.

The compromise was perhaps the different echo settings for different tunes, which settings were probably controlled and changed off stage by his guitar tech...plus the fact that they played a lot of old loved material which had never been played live ever or for years, to please their old faithful fans...

You are lucky to have watched Hank play so closely, Christopher. I have never seen him live.

Kurt, where are the PU changes on Kontiki and Shadoogie? I have always just played those on the bridge PU. Good to learn something new.

Hi Andy,

On Kon-Tiki it is during the "chord breaks", starting first time at 0:42 and repeated later.Hank switches from bridge to middle pickup and really digs down in the strings there. On Shadoogie it is the scales starting with open E6 and then doing the figure from E1 on 12th fret at 0:56.
Most players don't care about this, but if you want get closer to the original sound that's the way to go :)

I think the bridge pup is the Shadows sound- mostly, but really its the use of the trem and the particular technique- no matter which pup is selected.

Cannot find anything much about radio controlled switched but someone did patent one as above. I suppose it is possible to switch using a servo or similar radio controlled. I think most likely the signal is modified by EQ for the tune played by a technician on a desk.

Does Paul Rossiter of TVS fame know as he had access to Hanks gear ?

This thread reminds me of the first time I ever played guitar (as opposed to six-string bass) at a Shadows club.

I borrowed a Strat from a friend and essayed Cavatina, complete with volume pedal. In order to get the mellow tone I preferred, I selected the neck pickup for that song.

Someone (I can't remember who) came up to me afterwards and said, in all seriousness: "You used the wrong pickup for Cavatina".

Jim, he probably meant that Hank did not use the neck pickup for Cavatina.
