I don't recall ever seeing John playing the black Telecaster Custom (Fender WRHB in neck position, standard Tele pickup in bridge position). Of course, that doesn't mean much. MW&F weren't exactly media darlings and their pictures simply didn't turn up in print all that often.

To my eternal regret, I never once saw MW&F perform live, even though I was living less than four miles from the London Palladium in 1972, when they did a long summer season there. I did see "Marvin and Farrar" at a night-club date a couple of years later.

One black guitar I do recall seeing John play (and I even have one myself...) was this:

You can just about see the black LP on the cover of the Cliff goes East LP... Just about the only Gibson electric I like - the seeds were sown in the 70s when I saw Sacha Distel and his MD playing them (Sacha's was a Gibson, the MD was playing a copy!)

Couldn't justify the expense of the real thing, so settled recently for a black Stagg LP copy.

Like Jim, it is a source of much regret that I never saw MWF, M&F or the Farrar lineup of the Shadows...

I saw them on numerous occasions and the only electric guitars I saw John use were the Tele Thinline, the Black Les Paul, Gibson Melody Maker and the original Strat. I certainly never saw him with a Tele Custon, black or any other colour.

The only clue I have - apart from my own article for SCOFA! - is an interview where John says he uses Telecasters (plural) rather than 'a Telecaster'.

Maybe I dreamt the whole thing...

Thing is, I really don't fancy theThinline much, but the black one looks seriously cool.

This has been an enjoyable thread, even if we are no closer to answering George's original question. Stuart always has great info and I thought Howard's reminiscences were very interesting.

I did not see a black telecaster in John's studio in Malibu and it is not in any of the photographs I have of him. John told me that he still had the telecaster but I did not get to see it.
