Rarities 2 - Everything of Value.

Postby drakula63 » 11 Mar 2020, 15:13

I can't quite believe it. I've just bought a copy of this, off Amazon, for £12.40. It's brand new, sealed. I thought it was long since deleted and hard to find. Other new copies are going for between £47 and £59 :o and

Have I been extraordinarily lucky...?

This in itself is a rarity, quite hard to find nowadays. I bought mine in 1995 for about £11. It was one of the first CD's i ever bought.

Yeah, I was massively surprised when it popped up on Amazon at that price! Brand new, sealed and just over 12 quid! I thought it was a mistake at first! Speaking of which, the very first Shadows CD I bought, in 1989, was 'Listen to the Shadows'. I think the very first CD I ever bought, a year or two earlier, was 'The Best of Sky' or 'Sky: Masterpieces'. A long time ago! Hearing a CD for the first time was quite a revelation! Speaking of such; I shall have to unwrap my latest acquisition and give it a listen!

The girl from Ipanema is worth the price alone! Got a few unusual tracks and at the time was deemed the last album of releasable Shadows tracks from the vaults, luckily Tony Hoffman (I think?) did a lot of detective work and tracked down long lost masters and we got Abbey Road CD which is another essential for any fan. I hear more is in the vaults that could be released as they are in a finished state (probably just need a final mixdown/edit) but so far The Shadows have said no and their wishes have been respected but to be honest I don't think the men in charge can see any economic value in releasing what would essentially be a niche market and not a big seller but maybe one day.

I'm inclined to agree, since second-hand copies on Amazon are going for £15. Hard decision to make that... second hand, sorry - used, for £15 or brand new for £12. Hmmmmm... let me think...

P.S. Amazon prices for brand new copies are now between £46.82 and... £69.12 :o :o
P.P.S. 'Used' copies on Amazon, between £15 and £45.02

That was quite a feat.

It was only released in 1997!

I'm guessing there is some confusion here. The Shadows at Abbey Road CD came out in 1997 - but my copy of Everything of Value (£13.49 from The HMV Shop in Worcester - it's still got the price label on it!) states 1993 as year of release. I love Girl from Ipanema and Leave My Woman Alone.

Not only has the market for CDs contracted significantly in recent years, but also - sadly - The Shadows fanbase will have diminished. I was surprised that The Shadows at the BBC came out recently, albeit with two incorrect tracks which had to be replaced! I would be amazed if anything else of significance was ever issued - even in 2020 - the 60th anniversary of Apache. I hope I'm proved wrong...
