Love Deluxe. It got a lot of airplay and should have been a monster hit. Great vocal from Bruce! Or The Modern Way off the XXV LP. I'm not a big fan of much of their '80s output, but I love The Modern Way. Great vocal from Hank!

Second 'The Modern Way', probably the best Polydor original (well, written for them anyway). Mrs F. did not believe it was them when I played it to her. That and 'Guardian Angel' which shows an obvious Dire Straits influence. Also my dad's favourites from the Polydor years.

Also Scotch On The Socks which I have played in DJ sets and heard in mod clubs, and observed the reaction from people who would probably say they did not rate the Shadows at all.

I'd go for The Modern Way, i think they were trying to fit into the 80's synth pop style which wasn't really them. Track is different but not that great.

...but the lyrics to The Modern Way are all about trying to fit in with current trends. "We may be old but we live in the modern way". "I thought I had the answer/But I never really knew. Now I want to live in the modern way, I want to look like you do..."

The fact that some tracks sound different from what one expects from The Shadows, to me makes those tracks very interesting. Examples are the tracks from the albums "Shades Of Rock", "Rockin' With Curly Leads", "Specs Appeal", "XXV" and "Guardian Angel" and also single tracks like "It'll Be Me Babe" and "Love Deluxe". These are among my favourites, as well as all the 'typically sounding' Shadows tracks.

A metaphysical, philosophical question: if the Shadows no longer sound like the Shadows, are they still the Shadows?

To be fair, that's not the Shadows but Marvin, Welch and Farrar... and I think the general idea of MWF was to 'not sound like the Shadows' ! :D
